Current Practice
Biographical
Phyllis' practice is focused primarily on civil litigation and administrative law, involving a wide variety of complex litigation and administrative matters for major institutional and corporate clients. In addition, she has acted as an arbitrator and mediator for more than 20 years, and has conducted a significant number of commercial and labour arbitrations, including arbitrations as an Alberta Appointee to the arbitration roster under the Interprovincial Trade Agreement. She is currently a member of the Grievance Roster Committee for Alberta Mediation services.
The Canadian Legal Lexpert Directory recognizes Phyllis as a leading lawyer in Professional Liability Law and by Best Lawyers as a leading practitioner in Arbitration and Professional Liability.
Phyllis was a bencher for the Law Society of Alberta from 1981 to 1991, and President in 1991. She was a director of the Federation of Law Societies from 1991 to 1996 and was president in 1995. She was a member of the Advisory Board of the Canadian Lawyers Insurance Association (CLIA) from 1989 to 2012, and was chair from 2000 to 2006. As Chair of CLIA, she was also a member of the Board of Directors of the National Association of Bar Related Insurers.
She was a sessional instructor at the University of Alberta for many years teaching local government law, professional responsibility and advocacy. Phyllis has been involved in numerous continuing education programs for lawyers and others including programs for the Legal Education Society of Alberta, the Alberta branch of the Canadian Bar Association, and the Canadian Institute for the Administration of Justice. Phyllis is a past member of the Alberta Cancer Board and the Oliver Daycare Board. She was a recipient of the Canadian Bar Association (Alberta Branch) and Law Society of Alberta Distinguished Service Award (1999), the Edmonton Bar Association Distinguished Service Award (1993) and a Women in Leadership Law award (2015), and holds an "AV" rating from Martindale-Hubbell.
Phyllis is a member of the Law Society of Alberta, the Canadian Bar Association, the Edmonton Bar Association and is a Fellow of the American College of Trial Lawyers.
